The past couple of weeks have seen empathy make some very interesting advances in both culture and science.
First, Karen Armstrong’s TED Prize Wish, the Charter for Compassion, has gone into effect. So far 21 buy cialis online with a prescription,323 have signed on to declare that compassion (and its key constituent empathy) is at the heart of every ethical, spiritual, and religious tradition. The list includes everyone from Richard Branson to the Dalai Lama. What’s interesting to us about this is that it’s actually an echo of the 1893 Parliament of World Religions we documented in Wired to Care’s 10th chapter “The Golden Rule.” For that event, a much smaller group (40) of leaders from all acknowledged faiths got together to declare Reciprocal Altruism (compassion, empathy, the Golden Rule) the root of all their faiths.
We’ve linked a TED video from Robert Wright, an evolutionary biologist, who speaks at a Charter for Compassion event about how empathy became a survival trait among humans many thousands of years ago. It’s actually a good to bridge to the second recent advancement for empathy; buy cialis online with a prescription.According to the New York Times buy cialis online with a prescription, researchers this month published in the Review of the National Academy of Sciences a study that showed an irrevocable link between the hormone oxytocin and the ability to empathize. They showed that genetic differences in how much an individual is affected by oxytocin has a strong connection to how well they can figure out what other people are feeling, how much their own moods are changed by the people around them, and even how well they can put themselves in the shoes of someone they’re reading about in a book or watching on TV.
Most interestingly, oxytocin makes people more trusting of others, even when it comes to economic activity; buy cialis online with a prescription. Buy cialis online with a prescription: in a variety of investing game experiments, people exposed to oxytocin were twice as trusting with their partners as a control group. The scientists believe they have strong evidence to suggest that this hormone is the very basis of how humans learned to trust one another enough to form societies in the first place - buy cialis online with a prescription. It’s a survival trait that has served us well and will again.
If compassion is the basis for all our spiritual systems buy cialis online with a prescription, oxytocin is the basis for compassion. It’s the actual care that flows through our wiring.; buy cialis online with a prescription.

George Dana Boardman (subject of my doctoral dissertation) was at the 1893 PWR meeting at the Chicago World’s Fair, and if I’m not mistaken, was one of the speakers there and involved in the declaration.
