It seems as though Netflix is a great example of how you might automate empathy to a certain degree. Their collaborative filtering system allows them to understand what people want and recommend things that they might like. Interesting to think about how that might extend to other services…

The recent introduction of Netflix streaming HD movies via the Xbox is a great example of the company’s connection to customer needs. Recognizing that people expect immediate access to TV and movies has helped them to once again disrupt how people “rent movies.” Partnering with Xbox is a great way to excite early adopters who will share their excitement about the offering with others.

Opening up the Netflix coding contest to the public was brilliant. (Though still no winners as of December 10). Crowd-sourcing is an act of supreme trust in the consumer. But isn’t that essentially empathy – where the identity boundaries between company and the consumer blur?

Another great thing about Netflix, which Alex Steffen of “World Changing” loves to talk about, is that their service has a positive impact on the environment. In the past, people use to drive to video stores – with two round trips to rent and return videos. With Netflix people get the videos direct to their home without the driving, whether through their instant internet service or the USPS. It’s great when empathy can not only solve people’s needs, but can also indirectly bring goodness for the planet.
